Gunmen have killed a youth leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Orlu East Local Government Area of Imo State, Kenneth Amukamara.
They also set his car and house ablaze after he was murdered in cold blood. Although police authorities are yet to make a statement on the killing, the PDP youth leader in Imo State, Greg Nwadike confirmed the incident which took place on Monday night to Channels Television.
Mr. Amukamara was killed by the assailants at his residence in Awomamma in Orlu East LGA of the state.
Tension has heightened in the southeast in the past months as assaults on security formations and killings have become widespread in the region, particularly in Imo State.
Amukamara’s death is coming just one day after a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed Gulak was murdered in the southeast state, triggering a wave of condemnation from government officials.
Gulak was killed around Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area close to the Sam Mbakwe Airport road in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Sources told Channels Television that Gulak who was a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was heading to the airport when the assailants attacked him and shot him on the spot.
Gulak was trailed from his hotel room to the spot where he was killed.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, the police spokesman said: “On the 30/5/2021, at about 07:20hrs, armed bandits intercepted and attacked a Toyota Camry cab carrying Ahmed Gulak and two others who were on their way to Sam Mbakwe Airport to catch a flight.
“Ahmed Gulak left his room at Protea Hotel without informing the Police nor sister agencies in view of the fragile security situation in the South East and Imo in particular.
“He left without any security escorts and while the cab driver took an irregular route to the airport, six armed bandits who rode in a Toyota Sienna intercepted, identified, and shot at Ahmed Gulak around Umueze Obiangwu in Ngor-Okpala Local Government Area close to the Airport.”
