The One Command

For I spoke not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: but this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people: and walk you in all the ways that I have commanded you that it may be well unto you. But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the imagination of their evil hearts, and went backward, and not forward. Jeremiah 7: 22-23

Sacrifices and offering you did not desire; my ears have you opened: burnt offering and sin offering have you not required. Psalm 40:6

To obey the voice of God has been the one command God demanded from mankind from the beginning of creation and that command remains the same (Malachi 3:6).

Everything that a man will ever become in God hinges upon this very command. His ministry, his call, the purpose for which he was created, all these will only come to fruition in a man’s lifetime if he yield and apply himself to hearing and obeying the voice of God.

There can never be a progressive movement in God without obeying the command. Many church folks fall away because the Christian life becomes boring and stagnant and this is as a result of the absence of God’s voice. Spiritual walk is progressive; the revelations of God in a man’s life are progressive. When His voice is absent there is no upsurge movement in the spirit and in no distant time that individual become lackadaisical and eventually falls away.

When God’s voice is absent in a man’s life it means the man has refused to heed to that voice after many attempt by the spirit to engage him. For as long as a man maintains that path of constant disobedience the voice of the Spirit begins to recede until it can’t be heard anymore.

When God decided to choose a people for Himself, He chose the children of Israel (Deuteronomy 7:6). One of the main reasons He separated them unto Himself among-st other people was because He wanted a people that will represent His original intent on earth. He chose to separate them to a place where He will again begin to have fellowship with man, a people that will be an express representation of His image on earth. He separated the children of Israel unto Himself for the sole purpose of restoring that seamless heaven and earth connection with mankind in fellowship (Exodus 8:1).

For all of that to happen He made an appeal to His own, to only “Obey his voice”. That was all He commanded.

From scriptures we see that mankind from generations past to this generation have failed to heed to this one command. Very few individuals have been able to do so regardless of the seemingly prevailing darkness militating against them.

Man has always felt that religious practices make us somewhat right with God and as a result of this utter deception the true God has been replaced with the god of religion.

This has been the way of man even from the beginning. In disapproval, God said to his elected ones in Jeremiah 7:22 “For I spoke not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices”.

And yet man has only decided to bring Him burnt offerings and sacrifices. We might quickly begin to say we don’t offer burnt offerings and sacrifices anymore, in the real sense we do. Burnt offerings and sacrifices was the practice they had in those days to make them feel they were in right alignment with God. And it was never accepted if it wasn’t out of obedience. Today, we can liken the burnt offerings and sacrifices to the church attendance, prayers, fasting, tithe and offerings, praises, worship and night vigils. These are all rituals that makes man feel worthy in the sight of God. If we haven’t obeyed whatever it is that God has spoken to us as individuals, these activities become mere rituals and a colossal waste of time. They might make us feel spiritual but is all falsehood. God doesn’t delight in anything that exudes from us order than a response to that which he has spoken.

If religious activities make us feel good and righteous before God then we have lost it completely. If we cannot place a finger on the last time we heard the voice of God and obeyed him then we are like our fathers who went on with burnt offerings and sacrifices and yet walked a life of disobedience. God did testify against them, shut them out of His purpose and plans, they wondered about and the end result was death. The same is the case for majority in the church today. Many are wondering about without a defined purpose in life, take away their jobs and businesses and the true state of their hearts is revealed

...but this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice”

In coming to Christ it means an individual have said no to the spirit of darkness and have unconditionally accepted the Spirit of God. Therefore, anyone who comes to Christ has been given the capacity to hear His voice and the grace to obey was automatically credited to him because hearing and obeying the voice of God is the ONLY premise wherein a man will be in accurate alignment with God.

Unfortunately, we suggest to new believers who just accepted Christ on the things to do to keep their relationship with God and the least suggested is that careful reminder that the Lord will begin to speak to them and the only thing required is for them to obey.

True encounter with the Lord comes with his voice no doubt. It was on the Lord’s day when the Holy Spirit began to whispers to me to say that the church is meant to introduce the Holy Spirit to those in the church and allow them glide with the leading of the Holy Spirit. Unfortunately, church leaders take the place of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the people and Lord it over them to their peril. No bishop, pastor, apostle, teacher, elder, reverend, priest has the right to take charge of a man’s life instead of the Spirit of God (1 Peter 5:3). It is witchcraft to lord it over the people and create a barricade to hinder them access to God directly.

One of the reasons why the greater part of the church doesn’t walk in obedience is because the only voice they recognize is the voice of their pastors; they do not know the voice of the Spirit. Suffice to say that the current decay and gross darkness that has marred the earth is supposed to produce unabated zeal in the hearts of church folks to seek God for clarity as to what He wants. But it is clear that the desire to press into God for his voice to be known have been sapped by so called preachers of the gospel. Prophetic ministries are everywhere churning out false prophesies that elevates the flesh other than the cross. Sadly, the many inaccurate prophetic ministries that have littered Africa today are a judgement on the people who do not want the Cross but the cruse of oil.

And there were certain men, who were defiled by the dead body of a man, they could not keep the Passover on that day: and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day: and those men said unto Moses and Aaron, we are defiled by the dead body of a man: why are we kept back, that we may not offer an offering of the Lord in it appointed time among the children of Israel? And Moses said unto them, stand still, and I will hear what the Lord will command concerning you. Number 9:6-8

The sacrifices and all the rituals that man got into in the days of Moses weren’t perfect because it wasn’t the intention of God to introduce them. It took time for Moses to bring instructions to the people on the rituals they practiced in search for God. It was faulty, it was incomplete, and in Number 9:6-8 we see certain men who supposedly were defiled without a written law or instructions as to how they were to be made clean again. Moses had to go seek God for that particular circumstance. The rituals were never God’s intention for mankind and that was why he actually sent his Son Jesus to come restore that which was He’s perfect intention for a relationship between God and man. Jesus was and is the bodily representation of a relationship between God and man. No form of religious rituals, practice or activity is able to validate a man before God. The one thing that brings about God’s validation is that one command, to hear and obey His voice. Until we engage God in such a manner, every work we do, the sacrifices we offer will be an exercise in futility. It won’t count as anything in His presence.

People in various religion enjoy and love rituals in a bid to please some god somewhere. We pray number of times a day, we sing songs in praises to a god, we fast for days and months, and we read holy books, preaching the religion we believe in, we pay tithes and offering, some kill people to please a god, we sacrifice animals and do all manners of rituals to attract God. I once heard a sermon where the preacher said that a thousand dollars will get God close to you and if you give more it will even get God closer to you and many people gave lots of dollars to get God closer to them. They gave because they love religion, burnt offerings and sacrifices, they gave because they do not hallow God and his voice, and in a bid to get him closer to them they paid their way through to utter darkness. Now, that message is a message from the god of mammon.

When God made man, he gave him charge over the Garden of Eden. The Garden of Eden had all that man needed, for as long as man obeyed the voice of God he lived. The voice of God was what sustained man and kept him accepted before God. It wasn’t the food and the beautiful scenery in the garden; it was nothing but the voice of God, for as long as man obeyed God everything was perfect and God was pleased and satisfied with man. There was no need for burnt offerings, there was no need to offer sacrifices of any kind to God, and God required nothing other than obedience. Total obedience was all that was required and for as long as man obeyed, the relationship between God and man was seamless, it was the days of heaven on earth; it was the days when the will of the Father was done on earth as it is in heaven.

The emphasis of this writing aims to bring to our awareness again, the unchangeable truth that God’s only command for mankind from the beginning of time is that we OBEY his voice. Anything short of this infallible truth has no association with God. It then means that until a man begins to truly hear and obey God he has no business with God.

Sacrifices and offering you did not desire; my ears have you opened: burnt offering and sin offering have you not required. Psalm 40:6

That’s the first thing God will do to any man when he collides with him, He will open his ears to hear. He opened the ears of David because He required nothing but obedience. Until that happens a man can’t walk with God.

When you begin to hear God’s voice and obey all He is commanding you to do then you become a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God.

Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.” Hebrews 3:15

..but this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice”
